Washington state law prohibits discrimination in public schools based on these classes. The Washington Law Against Discrimination (WLAD) (2) also protects people from discrimination in employment, credit, insurance, and real property transactions.
The WLAD also protects people from retaliation for filing a discrimination complaint, participating in a discrimination investigation, or opposing discrimination. In 2019, the Washington Supreme Court ruled that obesity is a protected class under the WLAD. (2)
Under the law, everyone has the right to be free from discrimination at work, in housing, in a public accommodation, or when seeking credit and insurance. Any individual who believes that he or she has been discriminated against based on protected class status may file a charge of discrimination with the WSHRC. (3)
